Classic Eggs Benedict

Have you ever been or wanted to travel to New York, otherwise known as the Big Apple? For a Canadian like myself, travelling to the United States of America is a lot more feasible than crossing over seas to Europe or Asia. It takes less preparation to plan these trips and usually isn’t as costly. Sometimes travel isn’t always about visiting a whole new country and adapting to an entirely new lifestyle. For instance, a trip to New York is ideal for someone who enjoys being in the city as opposed exploring mountains and trekking across savannah. The culture and language is similar enough to where I live in Canada, so the environment is something I am familiar with. For some people this reassures them and makes them feel less uncomfortable about being in a foreign place.

What’s the point of travelling to a place that’s similar to home you may ask? Well from my experience of travelling to New York, it is the same, but different altogether. Their lifestyle is fast paced compared to other cities. People here expect quick service and are always on the move. In addition to that, language and some other cultural features may overlap, but the spectacles within and around the city are still different, not to mention all the street performers and tourists attractions that are available. I come from the prairie region of Canada, so there are many other sights to see when New York is bordering both Niagara Falls and the Atlantic Ocean. New York is also home to one of the most beautiful cityscapes in the world. With the numerous towering skyscrapers lining the city, such as the Empire State Building, National monuments like the statue of liberty and historic sites like the Ground Zero Memorial and Museum; why wouldn’t you want to travel to this wonderful city!

New York is also home to many culinary wonders that have taken the world by storm. Even if you haven’t tried all of them, I’m certain that you’ve had at least one. For example, did you know that the birthplace of hamburgers and hotdogs is New York? Even Coal Fired Pizza was first made here! Many different cuisines have also been named after the city itself and are served internationally at various restaurants, meaning the dishes established here are world renowned. You may have seen New York Cheesecakes and New York Steaks on countless menus worldwide! This just goes to show that iconic dishes have been established in this fine city.

The dish that I will focus on today is Eggs Benedict. A popular brunch item that is served in by countless restaurants throughout the continent and was first created in New York by a guy suffering from a hangover in 1894. Pretty funny if you ask me. It is a simplistic dish, yet it is visually appealing when layered correctly. On top of that, this dish possesses staggering amounts of protein. Did you know that when you eat a high protein meal in the morning, it is more effective at waking you up and instilling you with greater amounts of energy for the day than coffee is? Plus it’s more sustainable as well! Now without further ado, I will present to you the recipe for a classic eggs benedict! This particular recipe is the most basic form, but feel free to modify it by playing around with different meats and adding some fruits/veggies as well! Hope you enjoy.

Time to make: 20 minutes

Yield: Enough for 2 people

Utensils:

  1. Frying Pan

  2. Knife

  3. Mixing Bowl

  4. Whisk

  5. Pot

  6. Slotted Spoon (Spoon with holes)

Ingredients:

  1. 2 English Muffins

  2. Butter (Softened)

  3. Water

  4. White Vinegar

  5. 4 Eggs

  6. 8 Thin slices of Honey Ham

  7. Hollandaise Sauce (Recipe Below)

  8. Dash of Paprika

  9. Green Onion Slivers OR Chopped

  10. Optional: Fresh fruits or Hash browns for a side!

Directions:

  1. Boil some water in a pot until it comes to a roaring boil then bring the heat down to medium. Add a little bit of vinegar to the water.

  2. Crack an egg into the pot and poach to desired level. (Use the slotted spoon to check the level, really jiggly = soft; firm but still jiggly = medium; not jiggly = hard)

  3. Slice an English muffin in half and butter each half.

  4. Place the English muffins on a pan (butter side down) over medium high heat and toast until golden. Set on a plate, toasted side up.

  5. Take the slices of honey ham out and put them on the pan until they are nice and browned and crispy on both sides. Layer 2 of them on top of each English muffin half. Add one egg on top of each muffin half. Spoon some Hollandaise sauce onto each one. Sprinkle a dash of paprika on each and garnish with green onions.

Ingredients for Hollandaise:

  1. 3 egg yolks

  2. 1 tsp of lemon juice

  3. 1/8 tsp of salt

  4. 1/8 tsp of Cayenne peppers

  5. 4 Tbsp of butter (melted)

  6. 1 tsp of hot/warm water

Directions for Hollandaise:

  1. Melt the butter completely in the microwave in a separate bowl.

  2. Add egg yolks to a small mixing bowl and beat. Once beaten begin pouring the butter in and continue beating.

  3. Once combined, add in lemon juice, warm water, salt, and cayenne peppers. Combine.

  4. Use immediately or cover and have it float on hot/warm water.
